Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport® are popular facial rejuvenation treatments. Both consist of naturally-occurring proteins that can reduce the signs of aging by reducing overactive muscle activity. They are especially effective in reducing frown lines, but are also commonly used to help the wrinkles of the forehead, around the eyes (“crow’s feet”) and the lips. These products are highly safe, do not require surgery and have minimal side effects. The process usually takes less than 10 minutes, and patients are able to return to work shortly after their procedure. Results from Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport® usually take 72 hours to show their effects, but it can take up to two weeks. The results usually last three to four months. Fillers address wrinkles in an additive fashion. In contrast to Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport®, which reduce the activity of the muscles often responsible for wrinkling, injectable fillers add volume to the wrinkles, furrows or grooves. Injectable fillers are synthetic or naturally occurring substances that replace the skin’s collagen and natural fluid that is lost during the aging process. Although they are used for wrinkles, they are also commonly used to add volume to or better define the outline of the lips. There are a variety of fillers used. Each type of filler has unique qualities, is used for various circumstances and has different longevity. Given our expertise in local anesthetic injections in the maxillofacial region, injection of these fillers can be performed with minimal to no pain. As with Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport®, Drs. Obagi® skin products have been used extensively as a daily conditioner and treatment for fine wrinkling and facial discolorations. The surgical kit involves seven separate steps which are usually applied in the morning and evening. The products are designed to improve the underlying health of your skin and have shown to be able to remove fine wrinkles and brown spots. Patients tend to experience some peeling with the product. This is a sign that the unhealthy skin is being shed. When these products are combined with a chemical peel, the results can be quite transformational.

This is a non-surgical procedure that includes the application of exfoliating agents to the skin. Certain areas of the skin can be targeted with superficial, medium, and deep peels. This results in the regeneration of new tissue, which gives the skin a more healthy, youthful appearance. You may be a candidate if you have signs of photoaging, skin pigmentation, superficial scarring, or acne.

Several types of chemical peels exist, depending on their depth of penetration. In most instances, a medium-depth peel works well. A chemical peel may be performed with IV sedation, oral sedation, or if the patient chooses to do so, without anesthesia in our office. During this process, a solution is applied to the skin which causes the outer, damaged layers of the skin to “peel.” After several days, the new skin appears. It is recommended for our patients to have used the Obagi® skin products for a minimum of six weeks, but preferably four months prior to performing the chemical peel. Doing this will optimize your results. Recovery from a chemical peel is usually 7-14 days, but the results are long-lasting.
